Reckoning: From Unbound (Kindle Edition)
By Jeaniene Frost

This prequel novella ebook is from Jeanene Frost's wonderful Night Huntress world and was originally released as a part of the multi-author anthology Unbound.

Set in New Orleans in 2004 just before Bones (hero) meets Cat (heroine from Night Huntress series), this story follows Bones who is hired to catch a pair of serial killer ghouls. The story is based on the real life stories of Delphine LaLaurie (a socialite who tortured slaves in the early 1800s). Note- Cat does not appear in this story, but the recurring character Marie Laveau (Ghoul & Voo Doo Queen of New Orleans) does make an appearance.

While it is Interesting to see Bones before Cat, it was not my favorite of Frost's short stories. I actually really like the Night Huntress series overall, but I agree with the other reviewer that Bones did not seem as on top of his game as he does in other books.

If you like the Night Huntress series, you may want to read this story which is worth it for the $1.99 price. If you are new to the series, start with the first book Halfway to the Grave which is a better introduction to the characters and an overall better read.
