I like this series very much, and wrote a laudatory review of the previous book. However, this has a grim undertone that left me feeling down and disturbed. Since I think of this series as recreational reading, I took off a star for that. It is impossible not to be affected by the really horrible things that happened to Bradley's wife.

That said, the characters, primary and secondary, are well drawn, and there are elements of humor.
